What school choice in Ohio has meant for my daughter and so many like her

As the parent of a successful online public charter school graduate and a family engagement coordinator at Ohio Virtual Academy, I understand firsthand why it’s so important for families in Ohio to be able to choose a school that best fits how they learn and their life circumstances.

My daughter craves knowledge, and last year she graduated magna cum laude from Belhaven University. She also has dyslexia, which, as a child, would’ve made it much more difficult to focus in a brick-and-mortar environment. So, instead, she attended public school online, where she was able to learn without excuses, labeling, or comparison. She excelled so much in this environment that she even skipped a grade.

I work with families and students every day, just like my daughter, who struggled in a traditional brick-and-mortar school environment, and now, are beating everyone’s expectations with the help of online learning.

This week is National School Choice Week. I am grateful that school choice was available for my daughter and is available for thousands of families across Ohio. Let’s celebrate this choice and the successes of all students in Ohio, whether they learn online, in-person, or in a blended environment.
